Email Clients

An e-mail client sounds like a very technical computer term, but what it means is that on your PC you have a piece of software that is able to send, receive and manage emails. Another term used for email client is Mail User Agent or MUA. So your Email Client connects to a system which manages your emails and makes them appear in what ever way each email client software is designed.

Many email software packages like Outlook Express can access email using the software on your PC. It can download your emails and you can also work offline without being connected. Outlook Express email client connects to your mail server and downloads the messages when you want to read them and also sends them to your mail server when you want to send an email.

E-mail clients use POP3, which stands for Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3), protocol are rules for sending/receiving over the internet to retrieve e-mail from a remote server over a TCP/IP connection. Many subscribers to ISP e-mail accounts access their e-mail with client software that uses POP3.

E-mail client software is different to webmail. Webmail uses web browsers to send and receive emails. So no matter where you are all you need is a web browser. You don't need software installed on your PC. Very popular examples of webmail are Gmail, Yahoo & Hotmail
